Every day, Phoenix Police employees encounter situations most of us hope we never have to experience.
Tragedy. Violence. Trauma. Human suffering.
And through it all, they are expected to remain calm, professional, and prepared for whatever the next call may bring.
But what happens when the call is over?
For generations, the culture of law enforcement often encouraged officers to carry those experiences quietly. Today, that culture is changing. The Phoenix Police Department and Phoenix Police Foundation are working together to make officer wellness a priority, including creating a dedicated space where employees can step away, decompress, and take care of their physical and mental well-being.
Creating a Place to Recharge
Recognizing the unique demands of police work, the Phoenix Police Foundation partnered with the Phoenix Police Department to create a dedicated Wellness Space within the Employee Assistance Unit (EAU).
The goal wasn’t simply to fill a room with equipment. It was to create an environment specifically designed around the realities of law enforcement and the people who experience them every day.
Inside the space, Phoenix Police employees can access guided meditation, light therapy and stress-reduction technology, massage chairs, hydro massage beds, Normatec compression therapy, mental health resources, and confidential Employee Assistance Unit support.
Some resources help address the physical demands of the job, easing muscle tension, supporting circulation, and promoting recovery. Others offer something just as important: an opportunity to be still.
The Impact You Can’t Measure in Equipment
A massage chair or recovery system is easy to point to. The real impact of the Wellness Space is harder to photograph.
It’s the officer taking a few minutes to decompress after a difficult call.
It’s the detective carrying the emotional weight of a complex investigation.
It’s the employee facing challenges in their personal life while continuing to show up and serve the Phoenix community.
Those are the moments the space was created for.
As Sgt. Jeff Pluta of the Employee Assistance Unit explained in the Foundation’s 2025 Impact Report, Phoenix Police officers routinely carry burdens most people will never experience. The Wellness Space gives them a place where, even for a moment, they don’t have to carry those burdens alone.
Changing the Conversation Around Officer Wellness
Creating the space also represents something bigger happening within law enforcement.
Seeking support hasn’t always been easy. Officers have historically been expected to compartmentalize difficult experiences, continue to the next call, and handle the emotional weight of the job largely on their own.
Making wellness resources accessible sends a different message.
Taking care of your mental and physical health isn’t a weakness. Recovery matters. Asking for support matters. And investing in the long-term health and resilience of the people who serve our city matters.
The Wellness Space puts that philosophy into practice by giving employees resources they can actually use.
Supporting the People Behind the Badge
The Phoenix Police Foundation exists in part to help address needs that fall outside traditional department funding, including investments in officer wellness. The Foundation has continued to make wellness an important part of its work, including support for additional wellness facilities and resources for Phoenix Police personnel.
But ultimately, this story isn’t about a room.
It’s about the people who walk into it.
The officer coming off a difficult shift. The detective working through a challenging case. The employee who needs a quiet moment before returning to work.
Providing those employees with a place to recover, reflect, and access support helps them remain healthy, resilient, and ready to continue serving Phoenix.
Because taking care of a community also means taking care of the people who protect it.
