The Phoenix Police Foundation exists to support the people behind the badge. Police officers are asked to step into unpredictable situations every day — to respond quickly, make decisions under pressure, and show up when others cannot.
The Foundation helps make sure they are not doing that alone.
From critical equipment to specialized tools, funding helps ensure officers are prepared for real-world situations, not just the basics.
When officers or their families face a serious, unexpected situation, timely support matters. The Foundation helps ensure they are not navigating it alone.
Service comes with risk. The Foundation is committed to honoring those who have given their lives in the line of duty and supporting the families they leave behind.
Individuals, families, and businesses give to help support officers, their families, and the broader Phoenix community.
The Foundation works closely with the Phoenix Police Department to understand real needs and respond accordingly.

Matthew Giordano brings more than 30 years of law enforcement experience to his current role as Phoenix Police Chief. Chief Giordano started his career with the Phoenix Police Department in 1994 as an officer and spent nearly 23 years in service to the City of Phoenix before retiring as a Commander. During his tenure with Phoenix, he worked in various precincts and bureaus including South Mountain and Central City, Tactical Support Bureau, Community Engagement Bureau, Public Affairs Bureau, Traffic Bureau, and Family Investigations Bureau.
Chief Giordano retired from Phoenix PD in 2017 to become Executive Chief of the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office where he oversaw the day-to-day law enforcement operations. From there Chief Giordano was appointed in 2018 as the Executive Director of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST). In that position he led statewide efforts to elevate training standards, promote transparency, and reinforce officer accountability. His background in policing, leadership, and statewide training and accountability efforts position him well to lead the Department into the future.
Holding a Bachelor of Science Degree in Purchasing and Logistics Management from Arizona State University, Chief Giordano went on to earn a Master of Education from Northern Arizona University. His background in policing, leadership, and statewide training and accountability efforts position him well to lead the Department into the future.
Chief Giordano has been married for more than 30 years to his wife Kelly, a first-grade schoolteacher. They have three adult children and one grandchild. One of Chief Giordano’s sons followed in his father’s footsteps and is a police officer for the City of Mesa.

Having spent a large portion of my career in law enforcement, I understand firsthand what it means to put on the badge; its weight, its responsibility, and the quiet sacrifices carried by officers and their families long after a shift ends. Policing is not just a profession; it is a calling, and one that demands strength, resilience, and unwavering support.
The Phoenix Police Foundation exists for a simple but vital purpose: to stand behind those who stand between our community and harm. Through the generosity of our partners, donors, and corporate supporters, we are able to fund critical equipment, invest in officer wellness, recognize extraordinary service, and provide meaningful assistance during moments of crisis. These are needs that often fall outside traditional funding, but they are essential to keeping officers safe, healthy, and prepared.
Since 1925, forty-six Phoenix Police officers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. We honor their legacy by committing ourselves to the wellbeing of those who continue to serve today, and by ensuring their families know they are not alone.
